Action Map

The opportunity to upskill customers was discovered after an initial discussion with a hardware store manager. She noticed a high percentage of customers seeking contractor referrals. A survey with home renovation Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) revealed that customers either pay high contractor estimates, abandon the project due to costs, or accept the DIY challenge. Following a needs analysis, I created an action map illustrating customer pathways to bring a home design project to life. Choosing the DIY route will save them money and result in greater business for the store.

Slide Content Design - Storyboarding

I created a storyboard to present the specific educational options that would be offered based on SME input and met with client approval. The scenarios which situated each question within a real-world context covered the following:

Repairs and Maintenance:
It can be easy to get overwhelmed when problems arise. With the correct knowledge of industry terminology and the basic anatomy of a wall, the customer will be able to determine if corrective materials can be used or if the problem is structural and needs to be addressed by a structural expert.

Preparation Best Practices:
Understanding the costs and techniques involved in a project before beginning will enable the DIYer to successfully schedule and budget for the project with a margin.

New Project:
When a customer is greeted at the store, they need to have the confidence to do a project by themselves. Understanding the different design options will give the customer the chance to match their creativity with ability and materials successfully.

Visual Mockups

Adobe Illustrator
I created project assets, variables, and visuals to support the scenario in Adobe Illustrator.

Adobe XD
In XD, I designed and prototyped using interactivity to visualize my project.

Articulate Storyline
Once I knew the interactions I wanted to use, I moved to Storyline to build out and fill in the project.

Pre-Release
Learners including the client, SME, and site visitors completed the scenario-based eLearning project. Feedback regarding functionality and ease of use for the learner was adapted and the project was published upon all final approvals.
